Nothing better than Gord Live Dec 24, 2003
By William G Korb Having seen Gordon live in concert several times, I can say that this CD does a nice job of capturing that experience. Every venue that I've seen him at has been on the smallish side, and I think that plays well to his style of music and his style of concert. Being at a Lightfoot concert feels like having him sitting on the sofa in your living room and giving you a private show, and Sunday Concert has that feel, too. I've never been to a concert at Massey Hall, but I hope to do so before Gordon decides to hang up his guitar. As for the material on this disc, much of it was unknown to me before I purchased it. The "Ballad of Yarmouth Castle" paints a very vivid picture of a shipwreck that happened a decade prior to the more famous Edmund Fitzgerald, but it is no less compelling to hear Gord's telling of the story. "Apology" is a tale of love lost and the desparation of wanting it back. Anyone that's ever been in that position can easily identify with the emotion of this track. The final track is one that Gord has performed at every concert I've ever been to, and does an absolutely incredible job of telling the listener how North America in general, and Canada, in particular, came to be what they are today. "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" is a testament to the power of Mr. Lightfoot's way with language. If you don't already own this CD, by all means, add it to your collection today - you won't regret it!
